Captain Jason
Captain Jason Baldwin has over 45 years fishing experience. He caught his first King Salmon trolling from his sailboat at age 12. Securing a first mate job at 16 on Chinook pier in Grand Haven, Michigan led to his first Captains license at age 19, one of the youngest at the time on Lake Michigan.
He has since logged over 7,500 hours fishing on Lake Michigan and untold hours fishing and hunting in Bristol Bay Alaska, in and around Kodiak Island (Deadman’s Bay), the Pacific off of California, the straights of Florida, the Atlantic, Cape Cod area and even in the Southern Ocean around New Zealand. While he loves to catch & eat salt water fish and sharks, his lifelong love is Salmon & Trout. You are in experienced capable hands when fishing with Captain Jason.
He holds a “Near Coastal” United States Coast Guard (OUPV), 6 pack license, which allows him to travel up to 100 miles offshore with up to 6 passengers maximum. Not to worry we won’t be going too far from shore here in Chicago, as the fish are much closer, sometimes within a mile or two of shore.
Don’t forget that safety is our number one priority. The Top Dog is licensed in three States waters including Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Yes the Top Dog has been inspected by DNR officers passing inspections in all three States.
Currently Captain Jason is fishing full time out of Belmont Harbor, Chicago from mid-May through August. Prior to that in April and the first part of May you can find him and the Top Dog boat in Michigan City, IN. Captain Jason has fished many ports and brings varied techniques and methods to his style of fishing. We mainly troll using high lines (early in the year), diver rods, and downriggers. We use all kinds of presentations from body baits such as thin fins, metal spoons, to flashers and fly’s and even cut bait, herring and alewives. Captain Jason promises to work hard the entire trip to get every rod working and catching fish. No slacking here!
Currently, Captain Jason is the only Illinois Captain approved and a member in good standing with the IGFA (International Game Fish Association). If you want to chase records, give me some notice and we’ll custom plan a trip for you. Capt. Jason is also a member of Salmon Unlimited, and various other steelheader and coho clubs.
